Disability (SSDI)
- In most cases, you get Part A and Part B automatically after you've received Social Security disability benefits for 24 months.
- You can keep a Marketplace plan, and may qualify for a premium tax credit, during the waiting period.
- When Medicare starts, end your Marketplace plan the same way as described above.
ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease)
- You get Part A and Part B automatically the same month your disability benefits start. There's no 24-month wait.
End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
- You must sign up for Medicare. It isn't automatic. Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or visit your local office.
- If you're on dialysis, coverage usually starts with your fourth month of dialysis. It can start sooner if you do home dialysis training or get a kidney transplant.
- If you have ESRD and haven't signed up for Medicare, you may be able to keep your Marketplace plan instead. The rules are different for ESRD, so check with the Marketplace before you decide.
Medigap before 65
Federal law doesn't require insurance companies to sell Medigap to people under 65. Some states do require it. When you turn 65, you'll get your own 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period.
